“All the Light We Cannot See” czyli “Światło, którego nie widać” Anthony’ego Doerra może i nie zachwyciło mnie jakoś wielce, ale podobało się, o czym możecie przeczytać TUTAJ. A dziś, tradycyjnie, po skończonej książce w języki angielskim, mam dla Was listę nowych słów, wraz z cytatami z książki.

drub – tłuc, bić (get a drubbing – dostać wycisk) Each time he is caught; each time he is drubbed while Bastian looks on; each time Werner does nothing to stop it.

embrasures – otwory strzelnicze The rampart behind the hotel remains, though many of its embrasures along the top have been shattered.

equinox – równonoc, zrównonie The spring equinox has just passed; they face six months of unrelenting night.

escutcheon – tarcza herbowa He oils latches, repairs cabinets, polishes escutcheons.

extirpation – wykorzenienie, usunięcie Four years of occupation, and the roar of oncoming bombers is the roar of what? Deliverance? Extirpation?

gibbet – szubienica The blasts have stripped many shop signs off their brackets, and the gibbets hang forsaken.

languid – omdlewający, powolny, ospały, rozwlekły (np. ruch, głos, gest) On warm nights Marie-Laure opens her bedroom window and listens to the evening as it settles over the balconies and gables and chimneys, languid and peaceful, until the real neighborhood and the miniature one get mixed up in her mind.

lintel – nadproże The crests above the door lintels still have bumblebees carved into the oak; the ivy-covered fountain in the courtyard is shaped like a hive.

to roil – mącić, drażnić

to scuttle – zatapiać They’re scuttling ships at the port, they’re shelling the cathedral, and there’s no water at the hospital.

to sift – przesiewać Werner and Jutta sift through glistening piles of black dust; they clamber up mountains of rusting machines.

to trundle – toczyć They watch the coal cars trundling up from the earth and the miners spilling out of warehouses with their lunch pails toward the mouth of the elevator like insects toward a lighted trap.
